On Sept. 30, 2021, we gathered to celebrate our successful campaign to renovate three homes where women take on the hard work of recovery.

Executive Director Patrick Patterson thanked the donors, volunteers and committee members of the BuildHer Up campaign. He noted the significant challenges women face in the recovery journey, and the vital need for treatment services amid a rise in substance use disorders during the pandemic.

At the same time, Patterson said, Mid-Michigan Recovery Services is an organization founded on hope, and a community of donors and organizers rallied to this cause.

“This was, by and large, an inspirational example of women helping women,” he said, praising everyone who, despite a pandemic, persevered to succeed through heroic effort.

“The true heroes,” said board member Amanda Hayhoe-Kruger, who chaired the campaign, “are the staff of MMRS and the women who come into treatment and make these hard decisions to leave their lives and their families behind, to come here and get better for themselves and their families.”

Addressing the clients who attended, Hayhoe-Kruger showed off a special pair of high-top sneakers: “I wore my ‘Love’ shoes today. These are for you, ladies. Everybody here wants you to know that you are loved. Thank you for having the courage to come here. … We all have your back.”
